Dalia Kheer or Broken Wheat Low Calorie Kheer
Preparation time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 22 minutes
Ingredients
- Dalia (Broken wheat or lapsi) - 200gms or 1 cup (soaked in water for 3 hours)
- Rock sugar (khadi saakar or misri) - 200gms (you can also use organic jaggery.)
- Grated coconut - 1 cup
- Cow milk - 1 ltr
- Cardamom (elaichi) - 2
- Cashews and raisins (optional)
Preparation
- Soak dalia in water for 3 hours. Dalia absorbs water and swells, so ensure that you add enough water to the dalia.
Procedure
- Boil milk.
- Drain the excess water from the soaked dalia.
- On medium flame, add soaked dalia, grated coconut, jaggery or sugar to the milk.
- Let this simmer on medium flame for 20 minutes.
- Stir in between, so that the mixture does not settle at the bottom. The mixture thickens and dalia is cooked.
- Add cardamom and raisins after you remove the mixture from flame.
Serving
You can serve this low calorie kheer hot or cold.
Variations
- You can grind 2 tsp poppy seeds with grated coconut.
- Add cashews to the kheer after you remove it from the flame. You must fry the cashews in ghee till they turn golden brown. I avoid this as it adds calories.
- If you don't have time to soak the dalia, cook dalia in the pressure cooker till it turns soft.
