Dalia Kheer or Broken Wheat Low Calorie Kheer

Preparation time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 22 minutes
Ingredients

  • Dalia (Broken wheat or lapsi) - 200gms or 1 cup (soaked in water for 3 hours)
  • Rock sugar (khadi saakar or misri) - 200gms (you can also use organic jaggery.)
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Cow milk - 1 ltr
  • Cardamom (elaichi) - 2
  • Cashews and raisins (optional)

Preparation

  • Soak dalia in water for 3 hours. Dalia absorbs water and swells, so ensure that you add enough water to the dalia.

Procedure

  1. Boil milk.
  2. Drain the excess water from the soaked dalia.
  3. On medium flame, add soaked dalia, grated coconut, jaggery or sugar to the milk.
  4. Let this simmer on medium flame for 20 minutes.
  5. Stir in between, so that the mixture does not settle at the bottom. The mixture thickens and dalia is cooked.
  6. Add cardamom and raisins after you remove the mixture from flame.

Serving

You can serve this low calorie kheer hot or cold.
Variations

  • You can grind 2 tsp poppy seeds with grated coconut.
  • Add cashews to the kheer after you remove it from the flame. You must fry the cashews in ghee till they turn golden brown. I avoid this as it adds calories.
  • If you don't have time to soak the dalia, cook dalia in the pressure cooker till it turns soft.
